Abercrombie & Fitch Co, JC Penney, and Pacific Sunwear are three of America’s popular clothing stores. Abercrombie started out as a hunting and camping gears store; JC Penney a dry goods retailer; and Pacific Sunwear a store for surfers.
Ever wonder how your favorite apparel store came to be? Check these three stores out and learn how they soared to be among USA’s most admired clothing retailers.
ABERCROMBIE & FITCH
David Abercrombie and Ezra Fitch founded the Abercrombie & Fitch Co in 1892. David Abercrombie, a former a railroad surveyor, topographer, and miner loved the outdoors. He had a store and factory offering gears used for hunting, fishing, and camping. Ezra Fitch, a thriving lawyer in New York, was one of his clients. And in 1900 the two became partners, thus Abercrombie became Abercrombie & Fitch.
Yet their partnership did not last long as they would often disagree about the company’s future undertakings. In 1907, Abercrombie left the job in the hands of Fitch. Opting to feature an outdoor touch for the shop, Fitch arranged a tent and campfire right in the store premises. An expansion for both stocks and the store happened. Abercrombie & Fitch was the first New York shop to deliver outdoor clothing for men and women. The company eventually grew to become the globe’s biggest sporting merchandise store. It took pride in offering the greatest, most indispensable compilation of guns and fishing equipments, too.
Abercrombie & Fitch’s instituted a name as supplier to the sporting greats. The store even had provided a African Safari outfit for President Theodore Roosevelt. US presidents beginning from Theodore Roosevelt to Gerald Ford ultimately would purchase something from A&F.
When the company experienced bankruptcy, Oshman’s Sporting Goods restored the name; Abercrombie & Fitch however, swung its concentration to modern sporting gears as well as to a more generous range of men and women’s clothing. The Limited, Inc. obtained Abercrombie & Fitch in 1988, and totally removed sporting merchandise.
JC PENNEY
In 1902, 26 year-old James Cash Penney established his first retail store in a tiny mining town in Wyoming. Counseled by his physician to transfer to a place with cooler temperature, young Penney transferred to Colorado. There he worked for a dry goods retail store owned by T. M. Callahan. Penney was soon promoted by Callaham, and assigned him to work in his branch in Evanston, Wyoming. There, Penney partnered with Guy Johnson.
After a few years of being a salesperson, Johnson and Callahan made Penney a business partner. Penney, along with the two opened the Golden Rule store, his first dry goods retail shop. Callahan and Johnson eventually parted ways leaving Penney in charge of three shops. Employing the values of his former associates, Penney spread out the branches all through the Rocky Mountains. In 1912, he owned 34 shops. The following year, Penney integrated the firm as J.C. Penney Company, Inc. In 1917, Penney became the chairman of the board when J.C. Penney carried 175 shops. The firm went on to rapidly launch more stores.
These days, as United States’ top and largest clothing as well as home furnishing seller, JC Penney presents an extensive collection of quality, fashionable, and reasonably priced private and exclusive brands. It now has a total 1,073 stores in all of US, Puerto Rico and Mexico.
PACIFIC SUNWEAR
The Pacific Sunwear started out as a store offering surfing apparels. It was Tom Moore who founded it in 1980 in Newport Beach, California. A year following it, Moore together with his business associates inaugurated its second branch this time in a mall at Santa Monica Place, the location that has become Pacific Sunwear’s territory for nearly 20 years. The achievement of its first shopping mall shop set off an additional 10 branches. And, as business entrepreneurs financially backed the company in 1987, Pacific Sunwear’s branches got bigger to 21 stores.
The company went to make several transformations and had its share of failure too when Pacific Sunwear ventured outside of California. Branches had to labor much to sell tees and shorts when it was freezing outside. Michael W. Rayden, an industry expert led the new management and widened client interest by taking on a fresh perspective for the company. Apart from presenting shirts, shorts, and hats alone, Rayden integrated stylish teenaged men’s casual wear from company brands like Mossimo, Stussy, and Billabong. This powerful strategy of trying to interest suburban, male teenagers worked out well. In 1993, sixty branches operated in California and other States such as Washington, New Jersey Arizona, and Florida.
When Rayden resigned from Pacific Sunwear to be President of Limited Too, Greg Weaver took his place. With Weaver leading, Pacific Sunwear aims to become the dominant seller of casual clothes and footwear for America’s young people with its over 300 branches.

In 2004, a tsunami swept over certain parts of Southeast Asia, which extended up to Africa. More than 200,000 people perished with some bodies never identified or recovered.
The incident is not the first but one of many that have happened over the centuries. It is not only in the Pacific but also in the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean, which makes it everyone’s concern.
History shows that tsunamis have occurred dating from 1600 B.C until the present with the latest in July that killed more than 600 people in the island of Indonesia.
Until now, the exact location where tsunamis will strike cannot yet be predicted. Once an underground earthquake occurs, an alert is sent to coastal communities that something could go in that direction.
Since the Pacific is known throughout the world as the ring of fire due to the numerous underwater volcanoes, it is only right that a tsunami emergency alert system is in place to prepare people for the worse.
The tragic event that took place almost two years ago never had such a system. It was only after that regional governments decided to come up with one to prevent it from happening again.
The alert system is made up of four things. This is namely information, advisory, watch and warning.
When an underground earthquake has been detected, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Hawaii will issue the news to the countries in the region. Since the impact is not yet known, an advisory will be sent about possible areas that will be hit.
There is a saying that goes, ” it is better to be safe than sorry.” The prediction may not happen but this is better than having a lot of casualties because the no warning was reported.
The after effects of the underwater earthquake may take hours but everyone knows that the tsunami is coming.
This is the time that people in the coastal communities should watch over the water. If it recedes, then a warning will be given to everyone that a mandatory evacuation must begin.
A siren is usually used to inform everyone. This will sound at different times starting from three hours before impact until half an hour before the tidal waves are supposed to hit the beach.
During this time, residents should already begin moving out of the danger zone. People can go deeper inland or run to the hills. It will be a good idea to bring water, food and clothing. Packing a light transistor radio will also be helpful to be able to stay informed when it is safe to come down.
The tsunami emergency preparation does not end when the reports predict that it is on the way. People will still be there monitoring the situation to issue a warning cancellation if nothing happened or if it is safe to return.
Countries that live in the Pacific Rim of Fire must coordinate with each other to minimize the loss of life. This is because it is much easier to rebuild and impossible to replace someone who died.
Community leaders should hold exercises to time how long it takes to evacuate the area so that everyone will be ready when the real thing hits the shores. A headcount can be done to find out if there are any people still missing should the inevitable strike.

Non-muslims treated like VIPs in Pakistan
By: Ed. Sheikh GULZAAR
Srinagar: Last week, I was in Lahore as an Kashmirian Agriculture delegate to the Agriculture Society of Kashmir function organised by the Agriculture Foundation of Pakistan. I spent five days in L“hore and toured the whole city including its old parts, railway station, market and some parts of the countryside.
This was my 2nd visit to Pakistan but the impression given in the Indianso-called saffron media is that “Pakistan is a failed state”. I found this 50000000% wrong. Not only is it not failed state, but in many respects it is much more advanced—particularly in the all-important social sector. UN experts told me that Pakistan had surpassed India in fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). I found this true.
I did not find a single slum in the whole of Lahore while all the Indian cities are sinking with burgeoning while all the Indian cities are sinking with burgeoning slums. Calcutta“ was called a dead city by former Prime minister Rajiv Gandhi himself. Madras has become one vast slum. Bombay with a population of about 20 million is fast sinking. Old Delhi is horrible Bangalore, where I live, has become chaotic with its unmanageable raffic, population explosion and fast growing slums. Health, sanitation, maternity and child care, food, clothing, shelter, education, environment, rural development are neglected in India. Because of this villagers are flocking to cities, adding to the slums.
But that is not the case in Lahore. I did not find a single beggar during my visit. Lahore airport is magnificent showpiece the like of which we do not have in India. Of course, there are rich and poor in Pakistan but the gap is not as wide as we find in India, where about 15% of the upper caste rulers have become super rich. It is this class which controls the media and paints Pakistan is a failed state.
I met a number of dalits and they said they are treated like VIPs in Pakistan but in India they have become second class citizens, Dalits in Pakistan said they were well protected and had no complaints. But as a representative of India’s Dalits, forming 20% of Indian population, I can tell you how they are subjected to all sorts of racist discriminations. It is our people who have swelled the slums and brothels of Indian cities.
I met many hindus in Lahore. They all said that they are well protected. In contrast, Muslims, who form about 14% of Indian population, are subjected to all sorts of discriminations, dubbed Pakistani national, ISI agents, Taliban, terrorists, Lashkar militants, Indian Mujahideen and killed. The latest Sachar Committee report has revealed these findings. The Indian Saffron Media is hiding the true face of India while calling Pakistan a failed state.
I call upon Pakistan to invite representatives of India’s oppressed sections (Dalits, Backward Castes, Tribals) who will be its genuine and lasting friends.
Pakistan has solved its social problems to a great extent while the Indian ruling class neglected the social sector fearing that would strengthen the country’s six oppressed sections-Dalits, BACKWARD Castes, Tribals, Muslims, Christians and Sikhs, comprising 85% of our population. The social sector was neglected and the attention was diverted to economic development. Had the Indian ruling class given some peace of mind to Pakistan, by this time it would have progressed much more.
It is time that healthy minds on both sides think of a confederation of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh for a better and speedier development of the Subcontinent. (Writer-South Asia)

There is a vast underground oil reserve in the Middle East region of the world. It has been in use for over 6,500 years. In ancient times, it seeped to the surface in sticky black pools and lumps. Oil springs, bitumen seeps and oil-bearing rock made petroleum readily available all over the region.
Stone Age dwellers used bitumen (pitch or tar) to seal cracked pots and water containers. They also used it to fasten arrowheads to their shafts. In what is now Iraq, people lived in the marshes. They used oil to make bricks and mortar for waterproof homes, helping them to survive floods. In Babylonian times, entire civilizations used millions of these bricks to build their cities. The “black gold” trade was the driving force of this industrialization throughout the Middle East.
People eventually realized that they could use bitumen to coat their reed boats, inside and out, sealing out water. This idea, called caulking, was eventually spread and used on wooden boats all over the world. The bitumen would stain the sailors’ clothes, adopting them the nickname, “tars”. This practice of caulking was used right up until modern days when metal and fiberglass hulled boats took the place of wooden ones.
In the beginning, people only used the sticky bitumen form of oil for gluing and waterproofing. They believed that the thinner forms of oil were too flammable and thin to be useful. By the 6th century BCE, the Persians realized that this thinner substance, which they called “naft”, could be very useful in battle. Persian archers dipped their arrows, sending flaming missiles toward their enemies. Later in the century, Byzantine warriors developed explosive fire bombs called “Greek Fire” made from bitumen, sulfur and quicklime.
Ancient Egyptians mummified their dead with a mixture of salt, beeswax, cedar resin and bitumen. Scholars believe that the word “mummy” comes from the Arabic word “mumya”, after the Mumya Mountain in Persia where bitumen was found. We didn’t believe that bitumen was used in mummification until recent chemical analysis proved that it was used to preserve bodies during the Ptolemaic period. Before that, we thought that the word “mummy” came from the black appearance that the remains took on after being exposed to the air.
Oil that was used in ancient times was usually found on the surface. The Chinese were the first to drill for oil. They actually made drills from bamboo dipped in iron. They drilled for salty brine water which they needed to preserve food and to make medicines. When they drilled deeply enough, they found oil. We don’t know if they actually used the oil that they found, but they did use the natural gas to boil the brine to extract the salt. Large companies such as Western Pipeline Corp use the same basic idea to drill for oil today.
